Textbooks FAQ's

Here's a breakdown of what our recommendation codes mean:
  • Required - this one's pretty easy. If an item is listed as required, it means that your instructor says you need to have this item to pass the course.
  • Optional - this means the instructor thinks this item would be helpful to have, but you don't need it to pass the course; purchase only if you want to.
  • Required - Choose One - This means that there are several different versions of a book available for purchase, but you only need to choose one. Each version will be listed separately. Different versions may include paperback, hardcover, loose-leaf, or even digital versions of the required text.
  • Required - See Notes - This code means that an item is required, but there may be extra information about it that will help you decide if you want to purchase it or even where to purchase it. Look at the book or class notes to find that information. Some of the different types of notes are:
    • The item is required, but is not available to purchase from the Bookstore. Some publisher's or websites will only sell directly to students.
    • A digital version of the item is available for free online, but students may be able to purchase a printed version from the store for a reduced fee.
    • Required - Digital Version - This code is used when the item is only available in digital format. We try whenever possible to carry multiple versions, but some publishers only make materials available in digital format. There may also be info in the notes about alternate ways to access these materials.
  • Related Study Aid - these items are generally supplies and study materials that the Bookstore offers for sale that are related to a particular course. It is not mandatory for students to purchase them.
Basically, you are pre-ordering your textbooks for the upcoming semester. We pull your textbooks and get them ready so they will be packed and waiting for you to pick up before the books are available to the general public.
We gather your books for you ahead of time, pack them up, and have them waiting for you. This way, you avoid the crowds and the long lines at the registers. Plus, since we pull your books before textbooks are available to the general public, you get first pick of those money-saving used books, if desired.
Textbook reservations usually open the first day of enrollment for the upcoming semester. You can reserve your books until one week before classes start.
All online textbook reservations can be picked up at the UAA Campus Bookstore the week before the bookstore opens for the next semester's sales (please see the main page for hours of operation). The bookstore will hold your books until you either pick them up or cancel the order.
If you choose to have your reservation shipped to you, we will begin mailing orders two or three weeks before classes begin. We ship USPS Priority Mail, which typically arrives in 3 to 5 business days.
Absolutely! If used books are available, we will get them for you. Be aware that, unfortunately, some textbooks and materials are not available used.
  1. Click the Course Materials link under textbooks in the main menu at the top of the page.
  2. Put together your book list.
  3. Once you’ve selected the books you need, click on the shopping cart.
  4. Select an update action. Required materials can change at any time, so let us know what you what want if that happens in one of your classes. Read these options carefully!
  5. Log in. Unless you have ordered with us before, you will need to create a profile. The password you create is unique to our site; it doesn't have to be the same as another UAA account's password.
  6. Place your order, and we will do the rest!
Yes. We take Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express.
Unfortunately, we are unable to charge your student account for online reservations. If you need to use your financial aid to assist in buying textbooks, you may want to contact the financial aid office to review your options.
No. We can only reserve textbooks that have been purchased. We never hold textbooks that have not been paid for.
Our orders are manually processed, so you will only see a charge when we process and pack your reservation (usually about 1-2 weeks before classes start as books are still arriving).
For changes, cancellations, questions, or assistance, please call the reservation team directly at (907) 786-4759.
The policy is the same, whether you purchased books through reservations or in store after we open for the semester: The last day to return textbooks will be printed on your receipt. You must have your receipt to receive a refund, and books must be returned in the same condition in which they were sold. Packages, bundles, and wrapped books can be returned, however, all parts must be present and are subject to a re-stocking fee. The same applies to mail orders. Returns by mail must be postmarked by the last day for returns and must include a receipt and a note as to why the books are being returned. Pack your items carefully; we cannot issue refunds for items damaged in shipping.
You may be able to return books after the return date if you have dropped a class. You will need to bring proof of drop and meet all other returns conditions. For more information, please call (907) 786-4752.
If you have questions that are not addressed here, please call us at (907) 786-4759 or send us an email to aytext@uaa.alaska.edu. Thanks!

Textbook requirements can change at any time. All authors, titles, ISBNs, editions, subjects, classes, sections, CRNs, instructors, and prices are subject to change.
The listing of a used price does not guarantee availability of a used book; inventory is not reflected on this website or in our course materials list.
The notation 0.00 in a price field indicates that a price has not yet been assigned to that item. The price will be posted to the web site as soon as it is assigned.
We are not responsible for information used on this site for the purchase of materials from other locations. We can only offer refunds for books purchased from our store.
